The U.S. Capitol has begun displaying a statue of a teenaged Barbara Rose Johns as she protested poor conditions at her segregated Virginia high school. It's a pointed replacement for a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that was removed in 2020. An unveiling ceremony took in Emancipation Hall, featuring Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and the state’s congressional delegation. Johns was 16 years old in 1951 when she led a student strike for equal education at R.R. Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia.

Brown University is mourning the loss of two students killed in a classroom shooting. MukhammadAziz Umurzokov and Ella Cook died when a gunman opened fire during a study session. Nine others were wounded. Investigators on Tuesday were still trying to identify and catch the attacker. A virtual interfaith prayer service is planned for Wednesday, with ideas for a larger service after winter break. Umurzokov, an aspiring neurosurgeon, was known for his kindness and determination. Cook, a student leader, was celebrated for her bright spirit.
