Sudan’s military authorities have once again detained Ahmed Haroun, a former senior Islamist official wanted by the International Criminal Court for atrocities in Darfur. Two defense lawyers say Haroun was detained in Sudan’s eastern province of Kassala. Haroun was initially detained in April 2019 after the ouster of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir. He walked away from prison in April 2024 amid conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The lawyers linked his detention to recent comments in a podcast. Haroun's remarks stirred outrage among rights groups, who condemned them as a challenge to international justice.
