Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa has been released after more than eight months in prison. Guanipa announced his release in a video posted on social media on Sunday. Guanipa was detained in May. He was accused of participating in a "terrorist group" plotting to boycott legislative elections. His brother Tomás rejected the accusation and called him a prisoner of conscience. The release comes amid pressure on the government to free those detained for political beliefs. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez's government recently announced plans to release prisoners. But families and watchdogs criticize the slow pace.

Iran says it has had summoned all of the European Union ambassadors in the Islamic Republic to protest the bloc’s listing of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard as a terror group. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told journalists on Monday that the ambassadors had been summoned the previous day. The EU listed the Guard as a terror group last week over its part in the bloody crackdown on nationwide protests in January. While the move is largely symbolic, it does add to the economic pressure squeezing Iran, particularly has the Guard has a major influence on the country’s economy.
