Pope Leo XIV has declared capital punishment "inadmissible.” He has penned a social media post for the World Day Against the Death Penalty, as his native United States announced plans to livestream an execution by firing squad. The American pope quoted the revised Catholic teaching on capital punishment ushered in by Pope Francis. The Argentine pontiff had decreed in 2018 that the death penalty is unacceptable because it attacks the inherent dignity of a human being. Leo on Saturday wrote that the common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment.
