(SNOW HILL, Md.) - As the county seat of Worcester County, Snow Hill is more than just a place to do business.
A classic small town once overlooked is now getting the once over by people ready to explore this hidden gem.
"Snow hill is on the verge of becoming a cool town," said Mike Day, the Economic Development Coordinator for the town. Day held the same position in Berlin for 10 years as he worked to help the quaint neighborhood become "America's Coolest Small Town."
"There's some construction going on," said Day which he and Ann Gibb, Snow Hill's grant administrator, spoke of proudly.
"The building up here that's being renovated with the dumpster in front of it is going to be our new ice cream and candy store. The Hodges Taylor, that's going to be a coffee shop. We've had two new art galleries open in the past few months," he said.
"The first Friday of every month our shops and art galleries stay open until 8 p.m.," said Gibb. "These events are good for bringing people in and then they see it and they realize that the river is here."
With each stroke on the Pocomoke River, people discover new reasons to explore the town's ten water trails.
"It's a beautiful river. It's uninhabited. It's going back to nature," said Canoes and Kayaks owner Barry Laws, who's also a born and bred native of Snow Hill.
"Being on the river is important to us. The river trails through here, the walking trails, the paths and all - it's just a great place to come and explore the outdoors," said Laws.
On Saturday June 18, Snow Hill is hosting its first Return of the Goats Stand Up Paddle Board Festival at Byrd Park. If the name piques your curiosity, Goat Island is famous in Snow Hill for a certain furry farm animal.
"It is an island and there is a goat living on it and we're going put a couple more goats on it," said Day.
The exciting 'returning of the goats' is something you can see only at the paddle board festival this weekend.
"There'll be races," continued Day, "$5,000 in prize money for the paddlers. Baby goats for the kids to play with. You can take your canoe or kayak right up to Goat Island."
There's much more to explore in and around Snow Hill like the Pocomoke River State Forest and the Furnace Town Heritage Museum. But sometimes the best way to explore new places is to get lost in your own discovery.
