Southern Delaware Orchestra Brings Big Sounds — and Big Dreams — to the Beach
Southern Delaware’s own and only resident orchestra is striking all the right notes this summer with a season packed full of excitement, milestones, and music that everyone knows and loves. This vibrant community orchestra — one of the region’s newest cultural gems — will bring America’s favorite composers and iconic music to stages across Sussex County. Upcoming concerts include performances at Milford High School and Cape Henlopen High School, plus a major milestone: their first-ever appearance on the renowned Freeman Stage on August 12. But it’s more than just concerts. The Southern Delaware Orchestra (SODELO) is dedicated to using the power of orchestral music to enrich the community. From programs like the Children’s Beach House program in Lewes — where young listeners get up close with live music — to collaborations with local arts groups, SODELO is helping keep the arts alive and accessible for all. This season also marks a special “graduation” for some of SODELO’s young musicians who have grown their talents alongside the orchestra’s own remarkable rise. In just a few years, SODELO has blossomed into a full symphony orchestra, with unforgettable moments like a sold-out performance at Wilmington’s Grand Opera House and partnering with the Southern Delaware Chorale to celebrate its 40th anniversary with stirring performances of Messiah last December. Now, with a fourth concert season on the horizon and stages filling fast, SODELO invites music lovers across Delmarva to be part of their next big moment. Whether you’re a fan of timeless American classics or simply want to support the local arts, these concerts promise an experience that’s fresh, inspiring, and truly homegrown. Catch the Southern Delaware Orchestra at Milford High School on July 19, Cape Henlopen High School on July 20, and their Freeman Stage debut on August 12.
