Storms Cause Severe Damage Throughout Sussex County

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Strong Winds and rain battered the Eastern shore and caused significant damage throughout the Delmarva area. Areas across Sussex County had scary impacts due to the storms. Crews from the county had to battle harsh conditions in the morning as wires came down, trees fell over, and some even caused damage to homes Water flooded parts of Dewey Beach, like areas near the Rusty Rudder. Back streets looked like swimming pools with flooded water. A tree fell into a home, tree parts pushed to the sides of roads, flooding, and smoking wires was the scene around Sussex County. Gusty winds overnight caused issues for home owners. Luckily for some people in Dagsboro the tree that fell across the road this morning missed their home.  Charles and Charlotte Tracy, live in Dagsboro just around the corner. "It didn't hit anything, it landed in the street, and that's a good thing. Very very lucky, yeah that's a good thing," the couple said. But there's always the fear of worse happening. "When you hear the wind you know it's scary as the Dickens, you know you don't know if it's going to come down on top of our house," they said. For others less fortunate, just fifteen minutes down the road, it was a totally different scene. A tree crashed on top a home on Penn Drive in Roxana. Luckily no one was inside when it struck, and no injuries were reported. Sometimes you never see things like this coming. Fire officials from Roxana say even though you couldn't see the damage of the tree from the outside, it was hollow about six feet up and they say that was the cause for the tree falling onto the home. Officials said that when they're trying to clear the scene that it's important to focus on the safety of the family and also themselves. Michael McGee, with the Roxana Fire Company said, "To stay safe you would obviously want to stabilize it and you know if somebody was in there they could be injured and be pinned you know you gotta get them out, but you also have to be safe yourself." Firemen helped the home owners remove items from the destroyed home. "We assisted the home owner with getting perishables and daily needs clothes, toothpaste, stuff like that," McGee said. The living room crushed and the tree cut apart. But the Tracy's said when it's time for the tree to come down, it's going to come down one way or another. "That lot that that tree was on located has a lot of dead trees in it so I guess his turn was up." Despite the frightening scenes throughout the county we are told that luckily no injuries were reported. Towards Northern Delaware a tornado warning was issued but down here in the south we just saw heavy winds and rain. Officials today said to take alerts seriously because there is a reason they're put out, to help you protect yourself and your home.
