SUSSEX CO, Del - Two hospitals, two displays, one message of appreciation. Fire departments visited Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford and Beebe Healthcare in Lewes to show support for medical workers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Departments from the eastern and western divisions surrounded both hospitals blaring sirens and waving signs with encouraging messages for hospital workers transitioning through shift changes.
Chief Jack Wilson of the Seaford Fire Department expressed that this gesture was necessary given the particularly difficult times being experienced by first responders across the board.
“These people are stressed. The fire, and EMS, and law enforcement are stressed", said Chief Wilson". He continued saying, "we have to show that we care about each other".
Medical workers felt that in addition to receiving support from the community, it was especially heartwarming to see support from their fellow first responders.“It really brings me to tears and I can’t touch my face ," said Tiffany Travis, a registered nurse in Beebe's emergency department.
Tiffany remarked on how this moment was symbolic of the unity that it will take to get through the current healthcare crisis.
“To see them kind of being on our side and urging us on and being our cheerleaders as we cheer them on as well. It’s an extremely empowering thing to know that we can do this because we support each other," she said.
