GEORGETOWN, Del. - Sussex County held its 36th annual Caroling on The Circle at the Georgetown Fire Company due to inclement weather on Monday evening.
"This is really a food drive for the county and folks in the community that are less fortunate. Throughout the month of December we collect food items and distribute them through local food pantries so people have something to eat during the holidays," said Todd Lawson, the Sussex County Administrator.
In addition to Caroling on the Circle, Lawson says, "We always do a campaign called ‘Pack the Pod. It's a visual where there’s a pod out on the Circle and people come and pack the pod with their non-perishable food items."
It's two events wrapped into one, with Christmas carols sung in Spanish and English.
There were performances from Georgetown Middle School, The Children's Choir of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mariner Middle School, and the Sussex Academy Choir.
Last year, the food drive collected over 31,000 items for about 12 organizations. As of Monday night, and along with previous collections, they raised over 26,000 items.
"We're fortunate to live in Sussex County. We have a lot of people that donate and give back. It's just really special," said Lawson.
Since Caroling on the Circle began, more than 700,000 food items were donated through the program.
Sussex County says people can drop off non-perishable food items in Georgetown at the County Administrative Offices building or the West Complex Offices, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m.
The food drive will continue up until December 31st.
