Taking It Slow On The Roads & Equipping Your Dogs In Preparation For Cold & Snow

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Hours away from snow and what may feel like an arctic blast.

With COVID-19 still a concern, it bears the question if cold weather can make anyone more susceptible to getting infected. According to Dr. John Fink of Bayhealth the short answer is no, but he said Friday what you do after being outside could affect you.

"The cold drives people inside and that's where the infection rate becomes even higher," Dr. Fink said. "So we are all worried about being outside too long so we come inside, we take off our mask because we are huffing and puffing and that becomes a big issue."

DelDOT is asking people who need to drive through the snow to take their time. According to Community Relations Director C.R. McLeod, crews will be working throughout the weekend to clear the roads.

"We just encourage everyone slow down," McLeod said. "Give yourself plenty of extra space. Give yourself extra time to get to wherever you are going and that's really the key if you got to go out during during the midst of a winter weather event."

Dogs will need to head outside during the cold. There are items you can find in local pet stores like Pet Wants in Rehoboth Beach to help protect their paws and allow them to keep their bodies warm. Owner Chad Miller says people who own dogs should prep them when going outside.

"We do have paw wax here which is readily available," Miller said. But, we also have Pawz Boots which is a rubber latex boot that goes on their paws which will protect them from the salt application which can sometimes burn their paw pads but also keeping that snow from clumping up in their paw pads."
