LEWES, Del. - The Lewes African-American Heritage Commission will be holding a public ceremony for the placement of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way signs on West Fourth Street.
The ceremony will take place on Friday, February 28th at 1 p.m. on Burton Avenue and Fourth Street.
The Commission wanted the ceremony to coincide with the conclusion of Black History Month. The signs will be under all Fourth Street signs in Lewes.
Reverend George Edwards says the dedication will be near his church, Friendship Baptist. “I think this will give us a chance to keep the history alive of blacks and put everything together. We are just looking forward to moving in that direction,” says Reverend Edwards.
The signs will begin at West 4th Street and Savannah Road and end on New Road.
At the meeting, the commission focused on their next steps. They discussed their bylaws, mission and vision statement, their strategic plan, and how to accomplish their goals.
The public was also able to share their thoughts and ideas. The next meeting will take place on March 19th.
