GEORGETOWN, Del.- Sacrificing many things to serve our country and now there is another way to pay veterans back during the pandemic. A no-hassle process to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Sunday, the Veterans Affairs (VA) Outpatient Clinic in Georgetown administered Johnson & Johnson shots to veterans, their spouses, and their caregivers. The SAVE LIVES Act of 2021 was signed by President Biden on March 24 and it allows them to get a vaccine by just showing up to a VA facility. Nurse Manager/Operations Manager Laura Shockley says the law helps streamline the process for that population.

"Before we could not vaccinate veterans who were not eligible for care. Now we can actually do that," Shockley said. "Veterans can just walk in. We can go ahead and enroll them on the spot today and get them vaccinated within a very efficient time."

Shockley says the Georgetown clinic receives 300 to 400 vaccines per week. Along with weekend clinics, Wednesdays have been dedicated to vaccine appointments only.

Since January 2, the VA Clinic in Georgetown has been providing vaccines. Assistant Chief of Primary Care Dr. Romina Thomas says that it has been rewarding to give shots to veterans and their spouses during walk through events.

"We are so proud to be here and doing this and to have this opportunity to keep people safer, to allow them to get back to their families," Dr. Thomas said. "It’s been actually a very uplifting and wonderful experience for us to remember what we are doing and why we are in healthcare."

The Wilmington VA serves Delaware and Southern New Jersey. The division encourages eligible recipients to pre-register for a vaccine on their website. The Georgetown clinic will be able to let those in Sussex County know when a shot is available for them.
