Bagel Inspired Beer, Dogfish Head and Surf Bagel Partner for New DelaWeAre Beer

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- A Unique collaboration brings a unique new brew. Dogfish Head is collaborating with Surf Bagel for the latest DelaWeAre beer.

A black rye IPA with hints of chocolate, citrus, and herbs. It all started with a bagel. Dogfish Head brewer Bryan Selders says he chose a pumpernickel bagel simply because....

"That's my favorite flavor of bagel and my favorite thing to eat is a whitefish salad sandwich on pumpernickel from surf bagel."

Inside one of the cans is two types of unique black peppercorn. One kind from Tanzania and the other from Vietnam. But the special ingredient is a bagel of course. Chopped up pumpernickel bagels were used in the brewing process. But that doesn't mean there are pieces of bagel floating in the beer.

"We sat right here at this table and put on our cutting gloves and started chopping up bagels and added those to the mash. So the mash we strain with hot water to extract sugar from that grain. So

by putting in unto the environment we started to convert some of the starches from the bagel into sugar," said Selders.

This brew is the latest DelaWeAre beer. The DelaWeAre project started when the Delaware Brewers Guild asked all Delaware Breweries to craft an IPA to bring awareness to the organization. A proceed of each can sold benefits the organization.

Cans are available right now at Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats, and Chesapeake and Maine. Cans are sold in the emPOURium. But it wont be around long, only until supplies last.
