Baseline Testing Is Important

(SALISBURY, MD.)-According to the Mayo Clinic, three million concussion happens to student-athletes every year. That is why player safety is a top priority these days for high schools. Parkside Rams High School Trainer Cindy Riley said baseline tests are an important part of keeping the players from rushing back from a concussion too soon.

"So if an injury occurs we have a starting point after post injury to help us determine if their brain has healed and returned to that normally status," said Riley.

Delaware and Wicomico County requires any student-athletes playing a sport that they must go through baseline testing. In addition,if the student-athletes play a collision sport like football it might be done before competition begins.

"So if something does occur we already have stepping stones to start following our proctol," said Riley.

Indian River player Reshawn Turner just completed his test before his high school practice begins.

"At first it is a little challenging but you can adapt to it once you go along but it will take some practice after a while,"said Turner

Indians Football Coach Phillip Townsend said concussions are a hot topic and more people are becoming more educated about it.

"We have continued to try to advance our techniques, tackling skills to prevent concussions and as long as the football body, and teams have concussion awareness then I believe concussions will continue to decrease,"said Townsend.
