(BERLIN, Md.)- Berlin man is arrested after police say he was reportedly walking around with a gun.
On April 8, 2015 at approximately 10:00 pm, officers from the Berlin Police Department responded to the area of Pitts Street for a report of a subject walking around with a handgun.
Officers from the Berlin Police Department and Worcester County Sheriff's Office responded to the area and were not immediately able to locate the suspect.
During an interview with the complainant, officers identified the subject that was reported to have the handgun as Robert Wayne Bassett (W/M, 29 Berlin, MD). Bassett was reported to have been in a downtown establishment at which time he pulled a handgun out of his waistband and displayed it, disturbing several of the patrons at the establishment.
As officers continued searching the area, and Bassett was observed running into a different business. Officers surrounded the building in order to approach Bassett, who exited the business as officers were about to make entry.
Bassett observed the officers and turned around, running back into the business and drawing a handgun from his waistband. Officers observed Bassett to throw the handgun down to the ground inside the business. Bassett was then removed from the business and taken into custody and officers recovered the .45 caliber handgun that Bassett had thrown.
During a search of his person, Bassett was found to be wearing an inside the pants holster that had been utilized to transport the handgun on his person. Also during a search of Bassett's person, several containers of suspected marijuana were located. A check conducted at the Berlin Police Department later showed that Bassett is prohibited from possessing regulated firearms.
During subsequent investigation, sufficient evidence was located to indicate that Bassett was involved with the distribution of Controlled Dangerous Substances, specifically Marijuana.
Bassett was charged with multiple weapons violations, including carrying a handgun, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a handgun during commission of a felony, reckless endangerment, and possession of Marijuana with intent to distribute.
Bassett is currently being held on a $500,000 bond at the time of this press release.
