LEWES, Del.- One local brewery has been elevated to the national stage.
The Brewers Association, a non-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers, has named Big Oyster Brewery in Lewes the second fastest growing craft brewery in the country. The brewery estimates it will produce 5000 barrels this year.
""I could never have imagined we would be where we are now when this all started"" says owner Jeff Hamer. "Our brewery team is partially made up of folks who've worked for me since their high school days and I couldn't be more thrilled we've all taken this journey together.""
Head brewer Andrew Harton says the honor is a win for the brewery as well as their competition and the entire Delmarva peninsula.
"A lot of people in the craft beer industry, in the craft beer community may recognize Dogfish Head right away but not realize that there's so much other stuff going on down here," he says. "It kind of gives people an excuse to do a little bit of brewery tourism and kind of tour the area a bit."
