Businesses Hope To Score During Slam Dunk To The Beach

(LEWES, Del.) - After a hiatus, "Slam Dunk To The Beach" is officially back in Sussex County Delaware. Hundreds of people are expected to swell Cape Henlopen High School for the 3 day tournament. Business owners may be most excited to see the event return. Some are expecting a slam dunk business weekend.

It was wet and dreary on Delmarva the Wednesday before Christmas. But come Saturday the sun will be out in full force just in time for slam dunk to the beach.

Hundreds of people are expected in Sussex County for the three day basketball tournament.

"It brought people here in the off-season, which was great for our businesses, said Betsy Reamers from the Lewes Chambers of Commerce. "And then it went away."

For eleven years to be exact. Now it's back to showcasing some of the country's elite high school ballers from right here on Delmarva to as far as Wichita, Kansas.

"We're excited the Delaware Tourism office and Sports Commission decided to bring it back," said Reamer.

Businesses are excited too.

Grotto's Pizza on route 1 in Lewes has already scheduled several watch parties throughout the tournament.

"Yea, we're expecting more people to come into Grotto's Pizza and experience it for the first time, which is great for us," said Director of Marketing, Vinnie DiNatale.

They're even taking 20% off pizzas for anyone who goes to the tournament.

Betsy Reamer says "This gives them a reason to come here to the beach. The businesses will have the added people and their season will be extended."

It's a slam dunk to the beach and to the bank.

If you can't make it out to the tournament, you can watch the games live on MyCozi and get coverage from WRDE.
