DAGSBORO, Del.- It is peak season for butterflies and the Delaware Botanic Gardens are the host to many different types of them.
Thursday was the first day of the new program where volunteer teachers talked about the different characteristics of butterflies and what people can do at home to attract them. Following the information session, participants were able to tour the gardens and tally the different butterflies they found. Teacher Margaret Kimmel says there are about twelve different types of butterflies that can be found at the gardens.
"The large butterflies you see right now are different types of swallowtail butterflies," Kimmel said. "They actually have the little extensions on their hind legs that look a little bit like tails like coat tails more than a fox tail. You'll see a lot of them and a lot of smaller fritallaries and other things are in here right now. Monarchs a few. It's actually not quite the right time for monarchs here."
The program will be offered every Thursday in August at 11 a.m. It is free and participants must pre-register at http://www.delawaregardens.org/butterflies-of-the-delaware-botanic-garden.
The Delaware Botanic Gardens are open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults and children under 16 can tour the gardens for free.
