Cold Weather and Tips on How to Brave the Bitter Temperatures

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Temperatures were absolutely biter this morning heading out the door, and it didn't get much better throughout the day, so WRDE went out to get some tips on how to brave the cold. The highs around the area today peaked in the low 30s, that's 15 degrees below the normal for this time of year, but it didn't keep many people inside. People still hit the streets despite the biter cold. We can't control the temperature inside, but keeping the house warm can be a priority. Ace Hardware said they have you covered if you need to stay warm. Sheila Baull, a supervisor at ACe Hardware said, "We've got several sizes of the space heaters. To the small rooms, under the desk or large room we've got several." Ace also sells smaller items to help your car in the cold times. But the Meineke in Lewes said that cars can have trouble in the cold too.  Orlando Herrera, a service adviser at Meineke said, "One of the biggest things with the cold is it'll drain your battery, and the battery will have a hard time starting. So the best thing is you can go to any shop or even like an Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts they will test your battery out for you." They also said to keep an eye on tire pressure because the cold can also cause problems with that. "Cold air contracts but it doesn't expand again. So a lot of people those tire pressure lights will come on," Herrera said. So he spent some time today adding air to cars in the shop. We've already heard tips about how you can prevent your car from breaking down and also how to keep yourself warm. But the SPCA gave some tips to keep yourself and your furry animals warm in this cold weather. Chris Farral, the senior operations manager at the ASPCA in Georgetown said, "Shorten the length of your walks. They make lots of cute jackets and stuff for dogs it would be good to have a little extra warmth for them if you're taking them on a walk on days like today." He also said to be careful if you take your dog off the lease and let them out in the yard. But some of the things to look out for can be out of the owners control. "If you're taking your pets for walks on asphalt make sure you're kind of cleaning their paws afterwards in case your community has used any de-icers that could be harmful to pets," Farrall said.
