Controversy Over The Height of The American Flag in Bethany Beach

BETHANY BEACH, Del. - Tonight in Bethany Beach local veterans are at odds with the town's display of the American flag. One veteran says the American flag needs to be raised higher, while another veteran says it is being displayed correctly.

A symbol of respect for veterans now causing controversy.

Bill Murphy from Ocean View was shocked to see what he believes is the American flag and Delaware state flag waving at the same height at Bethany Beach Town Hall.

"I just hope that we can get it settled because it's a shame that they're disrespecting that flag like that with everything that's going on in this country and overseas its a shame,"

However, Fulton Loppatto with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234 -- who works for the town -- says the flags are not the same height, and it's the first time he has heard a complaint about it.

"The U.S. flag does have to be higher but it doesn't have a specific number. Been living here full time for 20 years and this is the first time we've had a complaint," explained Loppatto.

Murphy says people have been calling the town about this over the past few weeks

"After 4-5 weeks that can't be a mistake we have people calling all the time down there and they were told the same thing...' you need to speak to the police," added Murphy.

The town says a change is not necessary because images prove the American flag is higher.

Loppatto says by looking at the shadow people can see it also proves that.

But he understands why locals are concerned.

"It's actually sad that we've had a complaint like this, I'm hoping it was an honest mistake, I understand," said Loppatto.
