Customer Wins $1M at Berlin Grocery Store

(BERLIN, Md.)- According to a Maryland lottery spokesperson, someone who bought a Powerball ticket in Berlin was only one number away from winning it all.

The winning ticket was sold at the Food Lion grocery store on Old Ocean City Blvd. But they won't be the only ones celebrating; the grocery store will receive a $2,500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

"It's just all about luck, said Donald Walsh, general manager. "Fortunately it was one of my great customers, so I think that's pretty lucky."

Like many, Kyauna Purnell of Berlin says she's happy for the winner, but disappointed the winning ticket wasn't hers.

"I thought it was great," said Purnell. "I thought, I hoped it was me (laughs), you know, that's (my) first initial thought."

But that didn't stop her, and many others, from trying again.

"We're very busy from time to time, especially when the lottery gets to a high number. We see a lot of influx of people coming in," said Walsh.

Amanda Ely works behind the customer service desk and says she's noticed more people buying tickets.

"Well, normally we don't see that many during the day, but today it's been a lot," said Ely.

Not even noon, and customers were lining up in hopes to win that record-breaking $1.4 billion jackpot on Wednesday.

We asked some of them what they would do with their winnings.

"I'm going to help my family. That's my main focus," said Purnell.

"Keep a million for myself and give the rest to charity," said Wayne Darlington, Berlin resident.

Whether the next big win will be at this Food Lion again, one thing's for sure- there's a lot of "dough" to be made.
