DE Voters Have Voices Heard In School Board Elections

(SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.) - Voters are going to the polls for school board elections in Delaware Tuesday and emotions were running high over the candidates.

Voting began Tuesday morning at several schools in districts around Sussex County and statewide. But at Cape Henlopen High School is where candidates campaigned - making last minute appeals to voters.

As people were rushing inside to vote and get away from the scorching heat, supporters of Jose Saez and Roni Posner were turning up the heat in an emotional exchange of words.

Saez and Posner are going head to head for a five year term on the Cape Henlopen school board.

Posner, the incumbent, said she's made progress, but still has more work ahead.

"We need to look at our elementary schools in Milton and find the best way to create socio-economic balance," Posner said.

Saez said Posner's plan is possible, but the district needs to fix its lack of diversity in schools first. And that begins with its hiring.

"I'd like to see a transparency in the hiring process and make sure everyone gets a fair shake," Saez explained.

One parent we spoke to says what's really important is that they get new faces on the board with new ideas.

"The old comers -- already they're old people who've been serving for years," said Eva Cienniewicz. "They gave a great deal of their lives to it and they should happily retire."

80-year-old voter, Lillian Tunnell said whomever is elected needs to make sure "the children are treated right and have the children respect the teachers too. All that bad mouthing back we didn't do that when we're going to school," she said jokingly.
