WILMINGTON, Del. - Delaware's low-digit, number-only license plates are part of what makes the first state so unique. One man is on a mission to photograph the 3,000 lowest active plate numbers.
Jordan Irazabal of Wilmington captured his first license plate photo while he was a student at the University of Delaware in 2007. Soon after, he says his interest in what he calls The Delaware 3,000 project really began when plate number six sold for $675,000.
Plates are often passed down through generations and sometimes represent a person's status. Irazabal made appointments with the governor and the lieutenant governor to add numbers one and two to his collection. He says he's found most of the low-digit tags in Greenville, Dover and the Delaware beaches.
"The vast majority of photos on my website were gotten by pure chance, just going through parking lots, going to the beach, just snapping pictures while I was out and about," Irazabal says. "It started slowing down when I got to about 80 percent of them and that sort of forced me to start networking with people."
Irazabal has photos of 2,969 plates so far. He says people can email him pictures of license plates at pics@thedelaware3000.org.
