(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.) - Police were out in full force Wednesday in Rehoboth Beach - but not fight crime.
They came to escort a flame of hope for the 31st straight year.
The Delaware Special Olympics Torch Run began on Rehoboth Avenue and will make its way upstate when the games begin on Friday at the University of Delaware.
500 members of law enforcement will accompany the torch along the way. Since 1986, Delaware law enforcement has raised over $6.5 million for the competition. Parents and the community appreciate their efforts.
The torch will stay at Delaware State Police Troop 7 tonight, before continuing on its journey tomorrow which will ultimately end in Newark on Friday.
This year's summer Special Olympics will be held on Friday and Saturday at the University of Delaware.
