DELMARVA PETS: Local Entrepreneur Opens ?Pet Wants? Store in Rehoboth Beach

(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.) - When it comes to worrying about your pets' health, Chad Miller and his family know the struggle all too well.

"Hooch had allergies, so we had to give him allergy shots every week, and Trix had developed a lot of GI issues, so I was having her at the vet quite a bit," explained Miller, owner of Pet Wants Rehoboth Beach. "The veterinarian really told me I needed to find a good food that would work for both Hooch and Trix. That's when we found Pet Wants."

According to Miller, Pet Wants' is a carefully developed proprietary pet food that's slow-cooked in small batches with fresh, high-quality ingredients once per month, so every kibble is guaranteed to be fresh and packed with nutrition.

Within two months of feeding Hooch and Trix Pet Wants food, Miller says he and his family noticed a huge difference.

"I was no longer giving Hooch his allergy shots and Trix did not have to go back to the vet for GI issues," said Miller. "They had more energy, and they seemed happier. It seemed to really help them out a lot."

Realizing its benefits, Miller and his family decided to open their very own Pet Wants store in Rehoboth Beach.

"Our main mission and our character is so much different from other pet stores in the area as far as the big boxed names that you see on Route 1," said Miller. "We have a more inviting atmosphere. We have a lounge area in the back, so when it's really cold or really hot the pets can come in and relax."

Miller says he understands most pet owners are reluctant to changing pet foods; however, he says most name brand food is not in your pets' best interest.

"The major pet manufacturers of dog food are mostly owned by candy makers," said Miller. "The pet food industry is not regulated as much as what human consumption is, so a lot of the corn that is not decent or not qualified to go into human consumption, as far as candy, that food gets shoved off to their dog food blends. So, a lot of that food is not as nutritious as what you would think it would be."

Miller says another important thing to consider is that most commercial pet food is manufactured in mass quantities and sent to a series of distribution warehouses before finally making it to your local store. There, the food can sit up to eight months before even reaching the store's shelves.

"As dog food sits on the shelves in the warehouses, it loses its nutritional value of what little it already had, so basically your dog is eating empty carbs," said Miller.
