(BERLIN, Md.) - Developers have released design plans for the new bike and walking path coming to Berlin.
Renderings from the town's engineer team Davis, Bowen and Friedel, Inc. showcase the trail's green pathway winding in and around town with highly visible markings installed at street crossings.
Cyclists in the area Tuesday afternoon were excited to hear the new bike path has safety as a priority.
"There's the sidewalk and all but come summertime, there's a lot of foot traffic going on so it's kind of hairy sometimes," said Matt Meekins.
The 1.8-mile trail will connect users in several areas around Berlin up to Route 50 giving some riders a more convenient way to travel.
"Parking is always the hardest everywhere, especially in Berlin," said West Ocean City resident Morgan Talon, who bikes around town to visit her cousin in Berlin regularly.
"It'll be even easier for people to come and get access and say, 'oh we don't even need to take the car, we can just bike.' I think a lot of people are going to take advantage of it."
The bike path design plans also feature seating areas and rest stops with plenty of lighting.
Construction will be done in three phases starting in 2019, costing around $950,000 using money mostly from grants and a portion from town funds.
