(SNOW HILL, Md.) - Cars plow through ice covered roads in Snow Hill, Maryland.
"But you can see the side roads haven't been cleared. It's still very treacherous in a lot of places," said Michael Day who works in Snow Hill.
Officials say Worcester County saw over 8 inches of snow. That snow froze over, creating a slippery problem for drivers on those roads less traveled.
Worcester County residents say much of Maryland's main roads have been cleared off, but it's side streets like West Martin Street where the snow has been packed down and frozen over that have become an icy mess for residents.
Maryland State Highway crews salt the roads but tell wrde the salt does not breakup the ice - only sunshine can do that. "Crews are out treating this today. We were hoping to get some sunshine, but you know, it is mother nature so we are going to be using some icebreaking material, and we hopefully will have those spots cleared up by the middle of the week," said Charlie Gischlar with Maryland State Highway Administration.
Even some main streets have a visible coating. Others like Bay Road are restricted to one lane - forcing drivers to move over for one another. Residents say the biggest problem lies in town - on roads like Green Street.
"A little slippery. The main roads are open, but a lot of the side streets are still snow covered so you got to be careful - icy patches," warned Rob Tresselt of Snow Hill.
Drivers say they are making do by going slow. "I know I'm driving probably like a little old lady, but I am driving the speed limit with reason and common sense," said Kristin Jester of Ocean City. She said she had no problem driving into work and praised Maryland State Highway crews.
Others say the safest bet is to just stay indoors. Temperatures are expected to rise by the middle of the week - hopefully melting many of the ice-ridden roads across the state.
Maryland State Highway officials say they had 8 dump trucks working throughout the day. They warn drivers of freezing temperatures that will freeze wet roads a second time.
