LEWES, Del. — Bill Collick has spent decades bringing people together—whether on the football field, in the classroom, or throughout his beloved hometown of Lewes. Now in his 70s, Collick remains dedicated to his community, using his vast experience to foster unity and honor local history.
As a member of the Lewes African American Heritage Commission, Collick helped secure the naming of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard—a roadway he sees as a symbol of community connection rather than division.
"Some people might have thought that most Caucasian people lived on the east side and most Blacks on the west side, and maybe it was the divider," Collick said. "But actually, it was Dr. King and Reverend Edwards' vision of what America could be—people coming together, working with each other."

Collick’s knowledge of the town’s history goes beyond street names. He points out landmarks like the large fishing reel from the once-thriving menhaden fishing industry, managed by former Lewes Mayor Otis Smith. Smith, known for his progressive thinking, hired both Black and white workers and pushed for fair wages and bonuses.
Collick’s name is also synonymous with sports success in Delaware. As the head football coach at Delaware State University for 12 seasons, he led the team to victory more than 62 percent of the time. "I’m just overjoyed to have had the opportunity to connect with those young men," Collick said, reflecting on his coaching career.
After his coaching days, Collick continued his commitment to youth and education by serving on the Cape Henlopen School Board. He also lends his time to community initiatives, including volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
Whether mentoring athletes, advocating for education, or preserving local history, Bill Collick remains a driving force in bringing people together in Lewes. His passion and dedication continue to shape the community he loves.
