SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- March 20th marks the first day of Spring, and some Delmarva farmers hope the new season brings warmer weather.
"Right now we are behind in all of our ground preparation, all of our field work, ground work, spreading fertilizer," says Katey Evans with Evans Farms. "We just really need the soil to warm up to work with us."
Both Evans and Totem Farms' owner Rob Dick say the wet winter and cold temperatures impacted farming.
"I feel a lot better today than we were two weeks ago," says Dick. "I mean it did not let up rain from September it seems like."
Both farmers are moving full speed ahead with their spring tasks. Evans Farms' market opens on Sunday with a special visit from the Easter Bunny.
Another fun spring tradition took place at Rita's of Rehoboth on Wednesday: free italian ices.
"It's our grand opening basically for the year," explains co-owner Katrina Lennox. "So it keeps us busy on our toes all day."
While calendars differ, the exact start of spring (with the Spring Equinox) is viewed to start at 5:58 p.m. EDT.
