Food Bank of Delaware Feeds The Hungry During First of Five Distributions This Week

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Staying in the safety of your car to get food to bring home to your family.

People in need lined up to do just that in Georgetown. Volunteers loaded vehicles with canned goods, a protein, eggs, and other items.

Throughout the year, the Food Bank of Delaware asks for continuous support through volunteering at its sites or helping out in the community at a mobile pantry. Community Relations Coordinator Chad Robinson says the supply of food is always needed whether people donate items or send money to offset the costs.

"We know that thousands of Delawareans are experiencing food insecurity," Robinson said. "Thankfully, we've been over to maintain inventory so we can be here today and throughout this week doing those mass distributions as well as our healthy pantry center at our facilities and our 690 hunger relief partners from throughout the state."

While today's mobile pantry was not as busy as those during the holidays, volunteers braved the chilly and wet conditions to stock vehicles. Toby French is the chairman of the Delaware Voluntary Organizations Active and Disaster. He learned about the mobile pantries one year ago and sees firsthand the need for these distributions.

"When they are having to choose between food and you know paying the rent or paying the utilities, that is a terrible thing," French said. "So, if we can help them out in some way so that they don't have to worry about food so much and be hungry that is a great thing."

The Food Bank will hold four more distributions this week and will be back in Georgetown Friday at 11 a.m. at the First State Community Action Agency. They will have enough food to feed 200 families.
