Food Bank of Delaware Ramps up Efforts to Meet Unprecedented Need

MILFORD, Del - . The Food Bank of Delaware is combating increased rates of food insecurity in the First State. In the last three weeks the food bank has given over 1 million pounds of food to people throughout the state. A record distribution rate, according to the organization.

Chad Robinson, the food bank's Communication Relations Director, says the food bank has been well aware of issues regarding food insecurity in Delaware. Robinson credited recent food distribution rates to difficulties many are facing as a result of the current pandemic.

“Many people don’t have access to cars, or transportation to get to the stores or, or places they can obtain food. Many have been laid off or have lost their jobs altogether," said Robinson.

Timothy Messinger, a local volunteer, knows first hand how the need for food has impacted his Milford community. Messinger spoke with gratitude about the organization being an essential resource at this time. "The food bank here is like a safe haven for people who actually do need the food and can't really get it," he said.

Increased efforts on the part of the organization include drive-thru pantries held at central locations in Kent, Sussex, and New Castle Counties. These large-scale operations were first done back in March and will operate in a similar fashion.

People can drive up with open trunk space and proof of Delaware residence to receive food from the Food Bank. To maintain a standard of hygiene and social distancing, drivers are asked to remain in their cars. An additional caution added this time: no public restrooms will be available at the drive-thru sites.
