Football Coach Stands By While Team Prays

(LEWES, Del.)-The Cape Henlopen Football program are making adjustments after a post-game prayer received backlash.

Less than month ago the Cape Henlopen football program kicked off a wave a controversy.

The team is continuing to pray following their games, but the coaching staff has now been benched.

On Friday night after Cape Henlopen's football team loss to Sussex Tech the team came together and engaged in a prayer.

However, this time Coach Bill Collick and his staff were not part of that prayer group.

The controversy started after the Cape Gazette published a photo showing Coach Collick appearing to engage in post-game prayer with his football team.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation then alerted the school district's superintendent, to what they were calling, "a serious constitutional violation."

"You should not be mixing religion with these sort of things these are public events you can't do that," said Corey Smith. "It's against the law!"

Jay Jenkins is the Men's Head Soccer Coach at Cape, and although his team does not pray after their games, he still supports Collick.

"I know Coach Collick, I know he's a good guy. He has the best intentions so I back him one hundred percent," explained Jenkins.

Coach Jenkins is not the only one coming to Collick's defense. Many students believe there's nothing wrong with a post-game prayer.

"Being Christian myself I don't really have a problem with it. It's one of those things that are kind of like a good luck charm kind of thing," said Cape Henlopen student, Tyler Marker.

"You either stand up for what you believe in or you sit down and forfeit your freedom," explained student, David Farver.

While other students like Corey Smith are offended by the display.

"I honestly think they shouldn't be praying for anything at these events," protested Corey Smith.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation say, they are satisfied with the adjustments made by Coach Collick and his staff after Friday's game.
