Funeral to Be Held for Governor Ruth Ann Minner in Milford Wednesday

The funeral of Delaware's only female Governor, Ruth Ann Minner, will be held Monday afternoon in Milford.

Viewings were held Tuesday afternoon and evening. There will be another at 11 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a service at Milford Church of the Nazarene at 1 p.m. Governor Minner will be buried at Slaughter Neck Cemetery at Argo's Center

There will be several dignitaries in attendance to pay their respects, including President Joe Biden. This is the President's second visit to Delaware this week. He spent the weekend at his Rehoboth Beach vacation home, and went back to Washington on Monday. A temporary flight restriction is in place over Milford Wednesday in preparation for his visit.

DelDOT issued a special traffic alert Tuesday, advising that there will be delays in Milford and on Route One due to the procession.

Governor Minner died last week at the age of 86. She served Delaware from 2001 to 2009. Current state leaders, reflecting on her life, say she left a legacy across party lines.

"She was always working across the aisle, always looking to make an impact on the health of families across the state, impact the opportunities for education," State Representative Bryan Shupe (R) said of Minner. "And it didn’t matter whether you were a Democrat or Republican or the color of your skin or how much money was in your bank account."

Others say Minner's legacy as Delaware's only female governor is especially impactful for women.

"She was small in stature, but she packed a punch," said Melanie Ross Levin, Delaware Director for Women's Advocacy and Advancement. "I think that we can all kind of relate to that. And I think for Delaware women and girls, it’s important for us to see ourselves at the highest level. You know, if you never see a woman in charge, it’s really hard to aspire to be that."
