GEORGETOWN, Del.- Sandhill Fields has been open for over a year and has attracted families and sports teams to use the facility.
Different clubs like Henlopen Soccer Club and other leagues enjoy having the outdoor fields to play on. But an indoor sports facility does not exist in Sussex County and President of the Sussex Sports Center Foundation Joseph Schell says the Sandhill Complex could be the first.
"Nobody has an indoor facility that’s big enough and meant for just what we’re doing which is practice for our kids in Sussex County," Schell said.
The project would cost $6 million and include an artificial turf soccer and lacrosse field and an indoor field hockey court.
CHEER has plans in the long term to help improve its community center facility on Sandhill Road. CEO Ken Bock says that the plans include building more affordable housing for low-income seniors.
"The biggest part of our development plan will be to add additional apartment buildings," Bock said. "We own the one apartment building that is on that site right now. We would like to add at least two possibly more apartment buildings to provide at least 200 housing units."
Bock also said another goal is to move the administrative team to the community center. He says both of those objectives are part of a ten year plan.
Paving the way for more development to come in the county seat.
