GEORGETOWN, Del.- Happy Return Day Eve!
This year’s version of the tradition will not see the usual large crowds and festivities, no ox roast sandwiches this year. However, with much anticipation to find out a presidential election winner and a simmered down approach, Georgetown Mayor Bill West thinks the meaning behind it will still be prominent.
"This means we bury the hatchet," West said. "We get back to being Americans. We get back to being civil and not talking about one another, but talking up to everybody, to make everybody understand we can do this as a team."
Georgetown’s team of organizers including Senator Brian Pettyjohn, Representative Ruth Briggs King, and the Georgetown Police Department have outlined the safety measures in place. The circle will be blocked off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will be re-routed one block from the circle in all directions. Due to Thursday being a holiday, parking will be available around town.
Return day is a great tradition to be a part of, but there is much more to take advantage of this year as businesses around the circle will be offering specials during the event. Georgetown Chamber of Commerce President Linda Price encourages people to visit them as they continue to recover from losses during the pandemic.
"Anytime that we can bring people to town, it is going to help the businesses," Price said. "You know, the businesses so far have been resilient. They are trying to do what they can do to bring people in and keep their doors open."
Specials that people can anticipate include hot dogs from The Counting House and breakfast and lunch specials at Cafe On The Circle.
Organizers did not know how many people to expect here tomorrow. They are advising mask wearing and social distancing for people who attend.
