DELAWARE- It feels like this year has been an opt outside year. More people have been enjoying the outdoors after being stuck in their homes during the pandemic.
The message for Opt Outside day is simple: enjoy a healthy activity, the fresh air, and show how you opt outside through social media using #OptOutside. DNREC is offering entry free of charge to parks and the zoo with many unique exhibits to see.
"We’ve got pines. We've got trails," Delaware State Parks Community Relations Coordinator Shauna McVey said. "We’ve got pretty much anything that you want to do outside in nature, you can do in our Delaware State Parks."
Delaware’s state parks are not just places to hike or bike around but you can also learn about historical events. A prime example is at Cape Henlopen State Park where you can see buildings and equipment from World War II and find out how Fort Miles was used to defend our country.
The Brandywine Zoo recently opened their Madagascar exhibit which includes lemurs and tortoises. The zoo will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. You must make a reservation by calling the zoo or visiting brandywinezoo.org.
Delaware State Parks have restrictions in place due to COVID-19.
"You are required to bring a face covering with you and you need to wear it if you are not within six feet of people that are not from your household," McVey said. "We are also taking extra measures to clean more than normal: our bathrooms, our concession areas, things like that where people might congregate more frequently.
The parks will open at 8 a.m. on Black Friday except for Fort Delaware State Park, which is closed for the season.
