DOVER, Del.- Delaware Governor John Carney’s had encouraging words about a half an hour after getting his second shot of the Moderna vaccine.
"A big relief and I think I see and I hear that from all of the people that get vaccinated," Carney said.
He was just one of 5,700 appointments scheduled for Sunday's second dose event at Dover International Speedway.
On Friday, the CDC and FDA lifted the pause on use of the Johnson & Johnson one dose vaccine. Virginia has restarted administering the shots, but Delaware is still on hold as plans are yet to be discussed.
"The original thought was we would wait a week that the logjam might get broken this weekend as it has," Carney said. "So wait a week, get people willing to take an appointment there."
This clinic will stop after May 2, but The Federal Emergency Management Agency will still be keeping a close eye on vaccination efforts in the first state. Region 3 Coordinating Officer Timothy Pheil says the collaboration between the agency and the state has been important since FEMA arrived in March and will continue no matter where shots are being given.
"The Delaware DMV’s are going to be great tools to replace the capacity that this sight had," Pheil said. "But I anticipate in the near future that you know the spots for vaccinations across the United States are going to be moving the vaccinations towards people."
Governor Carney did not rule out the possibility of Delaware International Speedway reopening after NASCAR’s race weekend May 14-16.
A third shot back in play soon and efforts continuing to be supported from the local and national levels.
