High Sand Dunes Make Parts of the Beach Dangerous

(BETHANY BEACH, Del.) - Sand dunes in South Bethany and Bethany Beach are measured at about 10 feet tall.

Administrator for Shoreline Management Tony Pratt said these could be a danger for small children.

"Kids get out there and want to dig holes and caves around the dunes," Pratt said. "That can be very dangerous."

Right now he said the sand is still wet which makes the dunes hold in place. However, over the next few days it will start to dry out. This means it is more likely to collapse.

"If a whole dune column comes down on someone we've got a problem," Pratt said.

Pratt said the Delaware Department of Natural Resources will start bulldozing the sand as soon as they dry out. He said they will push the sand back up in the original dunes to stabilize it reducing the rick os a collapse.

He also said they started planning for beach replenishment which will take place in the spring of 2016.
