Historic Dumser's Dairyland Parlor Faces Demolition

(OCEAN CITY, Md.) - Legal troubles are shaking up worries at Dumser's Dairyland on the Ocean City boardwalk.

The popular ice cream parlor's historic building located near the inlet lot could be gone by the end of the year.

"This is actually where I like to go because it's kind of like a local staple," said Shaina Rafal who makes Dumser's her first ice cream stop when vacation in town from Wilmington.

Ryan Duvall of Kaiser, West Virginia, said the inlet Dumser's is a special place to him.

"I came here the first time when I was real little, maybe about 5 or 6," said Duvall, "and I got a huge cone. Ever since, every time I come here, I loved it so much that I always come to Dumser's."

The boardwalk property is owned by Ocean City. After a 50-year lease agreement between the town and the building's owners - Nathan Associates - expired last year, the company was asked to leave and demolish the building.

Nathan Associates fought back with a lawsuit but in July, a judge ruled in favor of the town saying Dumser's will need to clear out by Oct. 31 and the building destroyed by the end of December.

Loyal customers say they can't imagine the boardwalk without the special landmark.

"Everyone has that one place that they go to on vacation, if they do have a particular vacation spot, that they enjoy coming to. Other than that it's just a nice place to be," said Duvall.

"That actually really makes me sad because it's the first sign you see when you walk in," said Rafal. "I like seeing 1939. It's old, historic, it feels really good as opposed to something new. So I would be really sad to see that. Where would I get my ice cream then?"

Still, there's hope. Ocean City's town solicitor Guy Ayres said appeals can still be filed and if the town and the building's owners work out a new agreement, Dumser's can stay.
