(SALISBURY, MD) - Northwestern Elementary School learned that is has surpassed its fundraising goal of $25,000 for this year's Jump Rope for Heart to benefit the American Heart Association.
Northwestern Elementary is a school of only about 300 students in a small community.
Students participated in Jump Rope for Heart activities all day. In addition, Northwestern, this is the first year that all Wicomico Schools (elementary, middle and high) are participating in Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart to boost awareness of heart health and raise funds for the American Heart Association. Wicomico is the only school system in the state with 100% of its schools participating.
Northwestern's stellar Jump Rope for Heart effort has taken place under the great leadership of PE teacher Megan Block, who in 9 years in charge of the program at Northwestern has gotten students, families and the community to donate more than $100,000 to the American Heart Association.
One student, third-grader Delanie Spear, continues to be a top fundraiser not only at Northwestern, but in the state and the nation. (The $10,176 she raised last year was tops in Maryland, 2nd in the Mid-Atlantic, and 3rd in the country.) Delanie has raised more than $12,500 this year, adding to the more than $20,000 she raised in her first three years at Northwestern.
Delanie says, " I love helping people and getting them out of the hospital and I want to be a teacher to help people."
