(MILFORD, Del.)- More than 140 kids are smiling brighter this weekend, thanks to the Delaware State Dental Society (DSDS) who sponsored their annual "Give Kids A Smile" program on Saturday, February 6. The program provides free dental services to local under-served children in desperate need.
Other than provide free services, Dr. Robert J. Kacmarcik, Jr., president of the Delaware State Dental Society, says the program is critical because it helps get the word out about dentistry in Delaware.
"We're doing examinations, radio-graphic X-Rays and screenings," explained Dr. Kacmarcik, Jr. "In some cases, we're actually doing dental treatments, fillings, extractions, preventive sealants, and fluoride treatments, but most importantly, education."
Lizbeth Figuerla says she looks forward to this day every year, because it's the only time she can come to get her teeth checked. She's participated in the program for the past three years.
"I think this is good for everyone who's like me who doesn't have the opportunity to get their teeth checked every six months ," said Figuerla. "And it's just really good to keep your teeth cleaned so you have a nice smile and you're healthy."
Ashley Wyatt was there on Saturday with her daughter, Ava, who is 5 years old.
"As a parent, I think it's great that all people get a chance to have dental care," said Wyatt. "Whether you have insurance or not, I think it's a great program. So, I'm really excited to be here."
And let's not forget the wonderful group of people who help make days like today happen - the volunteers. DSDS says each year, about 350,000 to 400,000 children benefit from more than 1,500 events, and it's all thanks to the efforts of more than 40,000 annual volunteers nationwide.
Felicia Miller, president of the Student American Dental Hygiene Association for Delaware Technical Community College, says seven second-year students, eight first-year students, and three instructors were present on Friday. Miller says their main focus is to educate the kids about proper dental care.
"We're making sure that they know how to brush twice a day, that they're flossing properly, and then we include nutritional and also preventive measures such as sealants, mouth guards, and fluoride treatments," said Miller.
Saturday marked the second day of the annual two-day event. It was hosted at the Dental Offices of Norman S. Steward, Jr., D.D.S. in Milford. The first day (Friday, Feb. 5) took place at Delaware Technical Community College Dental Health Center in Wilmington.
