LEWES, Del. - The Lewes Mayor and City Council had a busy agenda Monday night. The council voted a motion to approve the memorandum of understanding with both the Lewes Library and the Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association to create a Lewes Library Garden Railroad Exhibit and a railroad display that would include railcars.
“We think it's a great enhancement to that part of town and you've all heard that's where the Lewes Junction Station was,” said Hugh Leahy from the Lewes Library.
Mayor Becker agrees it'll be a wonderful display.
“The structure that's planned is a replica of the station that's miniature, but will not be a functioning station,” said Mayor Becker.
The city says one of the goals of the exhibit is to educate the public on Lewes’ rich railroad history that dates as far back as the 1860s.
Action was also taken on the recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Commission to allow No Shoes Beach Bonfire business to operate on beach 1 and 2.
"We have a 2 year contract right now with Quest, and the reason for that is we are trying to get a feel if this is something we really want to do. Wouldn't it make sense for us to see how that pans out before we take on anything else?" said Carolyn Jones, councilmember.
The council approved a motion to maintain the existing agreement with Quest and not to expand the relationship with other vendors.
Council also discussed dedicating on-street parking for those who live in Lewes Beach but do not have off street parking.
"This is not something we can look at so limitedly ... as just considering the beach,” said Mayor Becker.
Council members believe the issue is not just specific to the beach, and decided there will be no action Monday night as there is "more work to do.”
