LEWES, Del. - The Lewes Board of Health met on Tuesday morning to discuss COVID-19 in the first town.
Dr. Paul Cowan, an emergency medicine physician at Beebe Healthcare, said vaccinated people are doing well against the Delta variant. He said as of right now, about .1 percent of vaccinated people in the First State have gotten coronavirus.
Dr. Cowan says at Beebe, they will change the visitor policy if they need to, but have not gotten to that point yet.
"The numbers are changing very dynamically, not dramatically, but dynamically. If you look at them they're doubling every day or two, but the numbers still remain low,” said Dr. Cowan.
He does believe third shots are coming.
"I was hoping in the state that our vaccination rates would tick up just in the last couple weeks, but they still haven't changed very much,” he said.
Dr. Cowan also asked the state about another mask mandate. They responded and said the only way the state can mandate masks is if there is another state of emergency, and there is no talk of that at this time.
The Cape Henlopen School District will make a decision towards the middle of august on whether students will be required to wear masks or not, this school year.
"Regardless of what the recommendation is and the action is, I see that being fluid as well, based on data, based on the CDC, based on the state and the governor,” said Cape School District superintendent, Bob Fulton.
Fulton says he is seeing an uptick in the zipcodes that make up their district but not in large numbers.
"We're averaging right now 5 cases per day in the Milton zip code, Lewes, and Rehoboth combined. That's compared to 40 cases per day during parts of last school year,” said Fulton.
In Lewes, masks are still required in city hall. Mayor Ted Becker says the city could go back to masks in the downtown commercial area and the beach, but the city is not there yet.
On Tuesday, The Delaware Division of Public Health, updated its guidance for unvaccinated people.
The agency now recommends the unvaccinated get tested once a week, isolate at home immediately if you develop symptoms or are exposed to someone with the virus, and get tested 5 to 7 days after exposure.
