Lewes Council Looks at Wayfinding Sign Ideas

LEWES, Del.- Currently the company Merje an environmental graphic design firm has a contract with the city of Lewes to limit sign clutter around the town. Today, members of Lewes city council, the mayor and other workers for the town saw ideas to push the plan forward. Beach, and Route One already have projects in the works that we will be seeing soon, but now Lewes is jumping on board.  The town said today that the signage they have now can be confusing and needs a fresh look. That's where Merje comes in, they're already working with the town of Rehoboth, southern Delaware Tourism and Deldot to incorporate the signs on route one and in Rehoboth. The town of Lewes says there's a lot in town and can be difficult to find. John Bosio, the Principal of Merje said, "if you look around Lewes there's a lot of sign clutter and what we'er looking to do is coordinate that so that it becomes a more consistent system. Easier for people to find their way and easier for them to understand all the things they can do while they're here." The town met earlier today with stakeholders to listen to their concerns to try to get together an idea of what they want to include on the signs. Popular areas were the ferry, parking lots, the university of delaware campus, and businesses Soon the hope is to point visitors in the right direction. Ann Marie Townshend, the City Manager of Lewes said, "let you know how to get to the business district, the Zwanendael museum, or the Lewes History Museum those other types of destinations that you can get to on foot." Areas with confusing signage just like the intersection of Savannah Road and Front Street, in Lewes are the reason why the town and Merje are working together. They want to avoid the clutter and confusion with the signs by limiting the amount that are in town. But other areas in Lewes also have the same issue. Ann Marie said, "the ferry or the state park or the business district or a museum. The signage will have a very similar theme and will point people to certain destinations." Merje says it's good for everyone invovled. "I mean it's good for business and it's good for the visitors as well," said Bosio. Merje has already worked on projects around the world. The new signage will be coming to Route one, Rehoboth Beach, and Lewes soon with similar designs. Each design is separate and will be unique to the area, whether it be the colors, placement, or size of the signs.
