(LEWES, Del.) - Another summer another season of parking problems at the beach.
The city of Lewes parking committee is calling on residents for their input about parking issues on and around Cedar Street. Some of the biggest concerns residents there have involve congestion, safety and a lack of enforcement.
"They park so close to the corner that you have to walk out into the street and look around to see if a car is coming," said John Henderson, a Cedar Street resident.
Free beach parking is available along the length of Cedar Street, where just a few steps away are public access points to the beach.
"Not a whole lot of people come to this private street where we park," said Chris Offidani of Oak Orchard, a frequent visitor to Lewes beach. "Don't have to worry about meters which is nice. That's the best thing is no meters."
Cedar residents say visitors not only park erratically but illegally, blocking driveways as well as both sides of the street.
"On the main street they park across and it's really tight coming down here. They're trying to get in their cars and the doors are wide open and they have no courtesy of shutting the doors so you have to really slow down," said Lisa Holt, a part time Cedar resident.
The parking committee is in the process of gathering recommendations on how to improve parking for both residents and guests. Some residents say daily parking permits that expire after a certain time would be one effective solution.
"I think there should be parking stickers like Rehoboth and anybody visiting should have to get a parking pass up to like 5-5:30pm, and then after that you can park on the street," Holt suggested. s
The committee will continue discussions about parking at its next meeting. If you're experiencing any parking issues or have concerns on your street you're encouraged to contact the city.
