Lewes Turns Teal in Annual Awareness Event for Ovarian Cancer

LEWES, Del. - September is ovarian cancer awareness month and several towns on Delmarva are turning teal to support the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

50 teal ribbons are now hanging on telephone poles, street lights and different signs throughout downtown Lewes. The city has turned teal for the last 7 years.

Henrietta Belcher-Stack was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 10 years ago on the first day of the awareness month and she says she didn’t even have ovaries. She’s now cancer free and using her story to remind other women to look out for the signs of ovarian cancer.

"There is no cure," Belcher-Stack says. "There is no good test to say this is ovarian cancer. You have to understand and know what those signals are. There's bloating, there's frequent constipation. There may not even be pain related to it."

In addition to the teal ribbons, businesses in Lewes and throughout the state of Delaware have brochures available that explain what ovarian cancer is and the symptoms to look out for.
