(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.) - It was a day of appreciation and of solace as veterans were honored at the band stand in Rehoboth Beach Tuesday.
Bayard Horn -- who fought in world war two received the prestigious Purple Heart medal at the event. It was an honor decades in the making and his daughter had the duty of presenting it.
"I was wounded a number of years ago when i was taken as a prisoner of war in France -- the invasion of southern France," said the World War II vet.
Many of the world's powers were at war.
On the battlefield -- more than 30 countries.
The US and its allies standing tall on one side and Germany and its allies on the other - ready to go head-to-head.
Then about 30 years later the Vietnam War broke out.
"You remember what's gone on in the past-- that kind of makes you a little sad," said Vietnam War veteran, Bruce Middleton. "But you're alive today and you're helping other veterans -- that makes us feel good."
It's not an easy job. But having the support of others could help.
I love all the people in the service - everybody," said Cheryl Blackman who was decked out in red, white and blue attire from top to bottom. "They're all so wonderful. They mean a lot to me.'
"So lucky to be here to celebrate this event...it's been great all around," said a grateful Horn.
