GEORGETOWN, Del - After 10 years of serving as Sussex County EMS director, and 29 years with the department altogether, Robert Stuart was honored with a retirement celebration which included proclamations from Delaware's House and Senate, and parting words from his colleagues and fellow paramedics.
Stuart, proudly proclaiming his 66 years on Earth, expressed a desire to slow things down and pass the baton. He explained that while his passion for helping others is still strong, he feels that it is now time to allow others a chance at leadership.
Reflecting on his tenure with SCEMS, Stuart said "we’ve got some great people, and being able to get the most out of those people has been enjoyable". He continued saying, "I’m confident that they will do a good job, and keep doing a good job and that the department will continue to grow and get better”.
Director Stuart will officially retire as the department's longest running service member next week. His successor, Robert Murray, who has been with the organization for 26 years hopes to continue Stuart's legacy of strong, people-centered, leadership, and dedicated service to the community. Additionally, he says his goal is for SCEMS to continue striving for excellence.
“I want Sussex County to be recognized as clinical leaders across the country [and] across the world," Murray said. Stuart will officially retire as director next Friday where there will be a formal Change of Command and Walk Out ceremony held in Georgetown
