SEAFORD, Del.- On Friday, a man accused of hitting and killing a nine-year-old Seaford girl in April was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
In April, 22-year-old Dwayne McConnell was charged with hitting Germani Truitt-Handy on German Road in Seaford after she checked her family's mailbox. Delaware State Police troopers reported that McConnell fled the scene. Later that month, McConnell was let out on bond, sparking a march and protest by Truitt-Handy's family, supporters, and others in the community.
In December, the Department of Justice reports McConnell pled guilty to Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death and Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Car Accident.
McConnell's sentence will be 18 months in prison, followed by one year of home confinement and 18 months of probation, according to the DOJ.
