Marine Master Plan Will Bring New Vessels to Cape May-Lewes Ferry Around 2025

LEWES, Del.- Getting ready for the future of a popular mode of transportation.

In a partnership with Elliot Bay Design Group out of Seattle, Washington, the Delaware River and Bay Authority is looking to take a deep dive into the ferry's next boats.

Director of Operations of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Heath Gehrke says the early vision is to be Eco-friendly while also having the size for more customers and their cars.

"In the Delaware Bay where we operate, shallow waters. We know what the capacities need to be going forward. We are looking for design criteria that is sustainable, in other words efficient, and provides green technology.

Since Grain On the Rocks opened about a year ago, there has been a partnership between the restaurant and the Cape-May Lewes Ferry. General Manager Jason Meisner says the investment made on new vessels should benefit riders.

"You couldn't have better partners with them thinking five, ten years down the road about expanding their fleet and expanding their offerings and opportunities," Meisner said. "We're very like-minded in that regard, so we can't wait to see what it brings to the table."

Adam Taylor of Millsboro rides the ferry once a year to get to Atlantic City. Whether riders consistently use the ferry or travel on it for special occasions, the benefits are as clear as the Delaware Bay water.

"The one time of year that I do it, I think it's great," Taylor said. "It's great that they want to invest in it and improve their product. It's transportation. It's good for the economy. I mean, it's used often."

Construction is expected to start at the end of 2024 and will go through 2025. There is no price tag yet. It is too early to determine whether one or more boats will be built.

Guerke says they would like customers to be informed as the process goes along. The ferry is planning to host webinars and post information on its website, https://www.cmlf.com/.
